PEM water electrolysis hydrogen production is increasingly regarded as one of the most promising technologies due to its high efficiency, low energy consumption, compact structure, and fast response to renewable energy fluctuations. However, in the PEM hydrogen production value chain, core materials such as proton exchange membranes, membrane electrode assemblies, and electrolyzer stacks face challenges of high cost, limited supply, and long delivery cycles—with the proton exchange membrane being the most critical bottleneck. 01Breaking Industry Bottlenecks: Proton Exchange Membrane Enters Mass Production and Delivery To address this bottleneck, BriHyNergy has pursued both deep collaboration across the industrial chain and independent innovation. Following the commissioning of a 4 GW proton exchange membrane production line in July 2023, the R&D and manufacturing team spent six months on equipment upgrades and process optimization, overcoming 28 technical challenges. They successfully completed full-process industrialization and batch production verification of different thicknesses and models of BriPEM® Dual-enhanced Proton Exchange Membranes. The BriPEM® Dual-enhanced Proton Exchange Membrane combines both physical and chemical reinforcement. It uses perfluorosulfonic acid resin as a solid electrolyte for excellent chemical stability, proton conductivity, and gas separation, while a high-strength polymer reinforcement layer enhances compressive strength and dimensional stability. On the chemical side, BriHyNergy’s proprietary hydrogen-removal technology drastically reduces hydrogen content in oxygen, ensuring safety, while its unique radical scavenger technology mitigates membrane aging and extends lifetime. With superior mechanical properties and proton conductivity, BriPEM® Dual-enhanced Proton Exchange Membrane can be widely applied in industrial high-differential-pressure electrolyzers. To date, more than 100 domestic and international customers have tested samples, with consistently positive feedback and strong performance data. Large-scale supply has now officially commenced. ▲Caption: Test data from customers 02
In addition to the successful mass production of BriPEM® Dual-enhanced Proton Exchange Membrane, BriHyNergy’s 4 GW membrane electrode assembly (MEA) production line was completed in 2022 and has already begun large-scale deliveries. The R&D team optimized the slurry dispersion process for catalyst inks (solid-liquid mixtures of catalysts, ionomers, and solvents), leveraging multiple dispersion methods in combination. This innovation improved particle size distribution, uniformity, anti-sedimentation properties, and slurry viscosity, solving the long-standing issue of poor dispersion and sedimentation in PEM catalyst inks. This breakthrough ensured uniform coating accuracy in both TD and MD directions, reduced slurry loss, and improved MEA performance. As a result, the performance of BriMEA™ Membrane Electrode Assembly improved from 1.83 V@2 A/cm² (first generation) to 1.69 V@2 A/cm² (second generation). BriHyNergy also offers customization services covering membranes, precious metal catalysts, active area, and sealing edges to meet diverse application scenarios, including industrial hydrogen production and consumer hydrogen health products.

From Breakthrough to Production: End-to-End PEM Electrolyzer Process
In July 2023, BriHyNergy delivered 3 MW of BriLyzer®-S50 PEM Electrolyzer Stacks (50 Nm³/h per unit), and in November 2023, released its first MW-class BriLyzer®-R200 PEM Electrolyzer Stack (200 Nm³/h per unit). At the same time, the company completed construction of a 1 GW semi-automated flexible electrolyzer assembly line, capable of producing multiple stack types across different series. BriHyNergy’s PEM electrolyzers comprise four major product lines: the R, S, T and M Series, both powered by self-developed high-performance BriMEA™ Membrane Electrode Assemblies. By applying multi-scale simulation, advanced corrosion-resistant bipolar plate coatings, high-conductivity porous titanium current collectors, multi-stage self-sealing technology, and highly consistent stacking processes, the company overcame critical challenges such as stack fastening under high assembly forces, two-phase mass transfer under large currents, bipolar plate corrosion in harsh electrochemical conditions, and sealing under unbalanced high-pressure conditions. These breakthroughs ensure product performance, stability, and durability. Thanks to BriHyNergy’s strong technological foundation and R&D commitment—replacing imported PEMs with BriPEM® Dual-enhanced Proton Exchange Membrane and improving BriMEA™ performance —the BriLyzer® PEM Electrolyzer Stacks have achieved significant cost reductions per stack, greatly accelerating PEM electrolyzer industrialization. ▲Caption: BriLyzer®-R200 PEM Electrolyzer Stack Gen 1 BriHyNergy has adhered to forward-looking R&D, using the proton exchange membrane as its core innovation driver to overcome supply bottlenecks, build technological barriers, and secure leadership in electrolyzer technology. By developing a complete PEM hydrogen production ecosystem, BriHyNergy provides one-stop solutions for green hydrogen production. Looking ahead, BriHyNergy will continue to advance technological innovation and product upgrades, delivering superior PEM core materials and electrolyzer stacks to global customers, accelerating the industrial application of PEM hydrogen production, and contributing to the global green energy revolution.
